For many, the wild mustang is a symbol of freedom. It harkens back to the settlers driving West in wagon trains and the Calvary. At the same time, wild mustangs have become a complicated and divisive issue as their habitat is threatened by development and climate change puts pressure on coveted food and water.

Reporter Bandon Loomis and I traveled the west to report on the state of the wild horse. What we found was a complicated situation where land managers, environmentalists and ranchers are at odds at how to best manage the wild horse populations. It’s a situation with no easy answers. How can we preserve this symbol of freedom?
