USA Today’s first NFT Offering
The team I work with at USA Today was recently tasked with creating USA Today’s first NFT offering. I plan to write about this project in-depth in the coming weeks, but I couldn’t resist sharing this incredible multimedia piece I assembled for the project.
The first question you might have is, “What is an NFT?” The short answer is that it’s somewhat like a collectible digital baseball card, with a limited number of copies. Ownership is recorded on a blockchain, making it easier to verify ownership in the future. For a more detailed explanation, I recommend reading this great story in USA Today.
For our inaugural NFT, we chose to commemorate a historic moment: how Florida Today became the first newspaper delivered to the moon by NASA astronaut Alan Shepard. Shepard carried a microfiche copy of a special section featuring a fantastic illustration of astronauts on the moon.
For the NFT, I compiled photos and front pages from 50 years of USA Today/Gannett space coverage to create an interactive photo mosaic using the moon illustration. The mosaic consists of over 100,000 tiles. As you zoom into the illustration, more and more photos are revealed, showcasing everything from Apollo launches to space shuttle missions, and recent launches by SpaceX.
Working on this project was truly amazing, and it required a massive team effort to come to fruition. I’ll share the full story in a later post in the projects section of the site. Until then, I invite you to explore the mosaic and marvel at 50 years of space coverage.
